eQUEST is an easy-to-use building energy simulation tool. Although eQUEST is primarily applied to new construction, it can also be used to apply the principles of energy modeling to conserving energy in existing buildings. This training will be targeted towards users already familiar with eQUEST, giving attendees the skills needed to apply an improvement-driven modeling approach to enhancing existing buildings in an effort to identify and reduce energy waste.

Designed to help users effectively apply eQUEST's capabilities to existing buildings, this improvement-driven modeling approach guides analysts in learning to think in new and innovative ways about energy modeling, while minimizing effort and maximizing accuracy. Analysts will learn a systematic approach to modeling existing buildings using eQUEST to achieve the desired goal – optimizing the return on energy efficiency measures proposed for a large commercial or public building. The focus will be on public assembly spaces, offices, public order, and public safety spaces. The reports and outputs generated during this training are suitable for investment-grade financial decisions. Additionally, the training will introduce new strategies for effectively developing trued-up eQUEST models that match actual utility bill usage before improvements are investigated.

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to the "Ideal Process Map for Modeling Existing Buildings"
  • The process of modeling existing building, and how it differs from modeling new construction
  • Understanding how current limits of the eQUEST tool should steer baseline model development efforts
  • Utility bill analysis of a fictitious building
  • Discussion of appropriate modeling strategies
  • Analyzing improvements
  • Predicting investment performance and analyzing risk assessment
  • Utilizing eQUEST for the LEVEL 1 audit – working with decision-makers and stakeholders
  • Balancing accuracy and effort by using a staged process

This program assumes that students are familiar with eQUEST, but have not yet learned to properly apply the tool to modeling existing buildings. The training will not focus on how to model particular systems in eQUEST.
